I just visited for the first time the Gettysburg area and battlefield  2 weeks ago. It was an awesome experience! I never got to go as a kid, but have always been interested in history and especially Civil War history. I would recommend a visit to all. We stayed at General Lee's battlfield headquarters at the Quality Inn, surrounded by the battlefield.

As I walked the battlefield, I just kept thinking about all the men who had walked the fields and died on them, the Wheatfield and Litlle Round Top in particular. I can't explain it but I felt unworthy to be on the battlefield where such honorable men died and bled for our counrty.

I learned alot, would go again. I loved walking the battlefied and walking through the town of Gettysburg as well. On the way to Gettysburg we stopped at the Flight 93 Memorial as paid our respects as well. It was a great 3 day trip but very sad in many ways. Thanks, Tony.

My wife and I also visited Gettsburg 3 months ago for the first time. I tried to prepare for the visit by studying maps and reading books but nothing compares to the actual visit. It was almost too much since I lost continuity on the ground. All it means is I've got to go back again. This is battlefield so mamoth in scope, it deserves a second visit to truly appreciate its importance.

Tony,
I visited the Gettysburg battlefield many many times and I can relate to the feelings that you have expressed.  Being in awe of the events that occurred on this great battlefield is quite natural.  The important idea to carry with you are the reasons that these brave men gave their lives and blood for their country.  They were all fighting for liberty in one way or another (both sides).  Now we are faced with a very similar situation in our great country.  We must fight to keep our liberty and to keep the government small, the way our Founders intended.  Use the emotion and awe of that visit to remind you that we all have a duty to keep our country free and that Liberty or Tyanny is but a generation away if we are not vigilant.

I've been to Gettysburg 5 times. I have not been there in about 5 years. It takes about 5 times to see everything (car tour, bus tour). In that I mean to grasp what you have seen and to take it in. It can be overwhelming. The third and fourth times is like you can really appreciate the area and become part of it. The ghost tours are quite gripping. I'm from Wisconsin but my wife is from Baltimore Maryland and she gets me to go on battlefield tours in Maryland and Virginia as well when visit her family who are residing in the Maryland, Washington D.C. and Northern Virginia area. A lot of history there.
